Fused Glass

Fused glass is a process that involves the use of a kiln and dates back to the Ancient Egyptians. The technique could be compared to mosaic inlay work. Sometimes more than 50 pieces of glass, cut, ground and polished go into a single piece of artwork. Each piece may go through as many as five separate firings in a kiln. The first firing at high temperature fully fuses all of the design elements together. The second and subsequent firings are used to add more glass layers or fire polish the edges.
